Hello parents and guardians,
Happy Fri-yay! This week we showed a lot of what we are learning and have learned so far. We continued to practice understanding shadows. We also completed a timed writing with two different sources and continued to challenge ourselves to write paragraphs instead of sentences. Finally, we went back and reviewed our main addition strategies and compared numbers. We are also so proud of the Northwood Reading Bowl team for advancing regionals!
IN CASE OF REMOTE LEARNING: While the district has not yet made a decision about school on Monday or beyond, they have asked that we send home remote learning plans to be used IF/WHEN an inclement weather remote day is needed. Please see the attached PDF for remote learning options and continue to check the district website or the Northwood website for up to date information. Be safe this weekend!
Reading Skill Groups:
Students will participate in flexible reading groups across the grade level to receive instruction that best matches their individual reading needs. This means your child may work with different teachers during a small portion of the reading block, depending on the specific skills they are practicing or have already mastered. These groups change as students grow, ensuring they get the right support or enrichment at the right time. This will not change your child’s homeroom class, and your child will be with their teacher of record for the remainder of the ELA block. Flexible grouping simply helps us provide more targeted, effective reading instruction for every learner. Please reach out to Mrs. Imhulse if you'd like more information about reading skills groups imhulse@fultonschools.org.

Hello parents and guardians,
Happy Friday everyone! This was another wonderfully full week in 2nd Grade. Our Read Across America weeklong celebration was a huge success. Students were both excited to participate in the daily themed activities and encouraged to read even more throughout the week. In addtion to reading, 2nd graders published their opinion pieces on volunteering and started a new opinion paragraph centered around which animal ears they would choose. Ask your child why they would prefer elephant or rabbit ears. Students also learned a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his tremendous impact on our nation. Finally, our masked reader competition has come to a close. Please ask your child who their favorite reader was this week. We'll reveal all the readers next week!

Hello parents and guardians,
Happy Friday everyone! This was another spectacular week in 2nd Grade. We finally found out the true identities of all the Masked Readers and there were a few surprises. Ask your child who their favorite reader was revealed to be. We also celebrated Exceptional Child Week this week. Students had fun wearing different colors and recognizing their fellow classmates with exceptional needs. In Reading, we learned more about text features and using a character's perspective to understand a story. Students also explored a great deal with symmetry, 2D and 3D shapes. Finally we showed what we know about Juliette Gordon Low, Jackie Robinson, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These 3 Georgia heroes really had a powerful impact on our nation.

The SSS Inventory is about 15-20 items and administered to students in the Fall and Spring. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. Students complete the SSS Inventory using the Illuminate platform.

Hello Parents and Guardians,
Happy Friday everyone! What a wonderful week in 2nd Grade. This week we used context clues and text features to help us understand a text. In Math, we continued our exploration of geometry and partitioned various shapes into halves, thirds and fourths. In Accelerated Math, we learned about telling time in various ways and calculating elapsed time. In Social Studies, we continued learning about the huge impact of Jimmy Carter on our nation. Finally, in the words of Ms. Rucker, "We dazzled at the AVID Showcase!" Our students showed just how responsible, respectful, and engaged they could be as representatives from various school districts including our own came to Northwood to see how we integrate AVID strategies in the classroom. Our students truly shined bright this week!

Hello Parents and Guardians,
It's been another great week in 2nd Grade! This week we debated whether or not students should wear school uniforms. We then transformed our ideas into another published opinion writing piece. Please ask your child what they think about school uniforms? We also continued our exploration of partitioning shapes and discovered how that leads to the wonderful world of fractions! In Acc. Math, we showed what we know about time on the Unit 7 Assessment. We've also learned to identify the different levels of government including city, state, and nation. Finally, we ended our week off with a PBIS Rewards shopping spree. Please ask your child what they chose for their PBIS reward this month and continue to encourage them to be respectful, responsible and engaged!

The Student Success Skills Inventory is used to measure student growth across Student Success Skill standards taught by teachers. Students complete the inventory by indicating if they almost always, always, sometimes, or never apply the skills being taught in the areas of Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Competence, Collaborative Problem Solving, Reflective Learning Strategies, and Sense of Belonging.
The SSS Inventory is about 15-20 items and administered to students in the Fall and Spring. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. Students complete the SSS Inventory using the Illuminate platform.

Hello Parents and Guardians,
We had a great week wrapping things up before we head off on Spring Break. Can you believe we’ve already reached this point?! STEM day was a blast! Students built barges and tested how much cargo they could hold in water. They worked to build the tallest straw towers that they could make. There was a rotation where they had to construct a track for a pom pom to travel for at least 15 seconds. And lastly they had to build a structure that could hold the most pennies. Ask them which was their favorite! We ended our SS units on Georgia Heroes and government and then we will begin the REALLY fun lifecycles unit in science when we come back.
Calendar Dates:
April 6-11 - Spring Break (No School)
April 17 - All Pro Dad
April 29 - May 1, 5-8 - GA Milestones Assessments for 3rd -5th graders
Talent Show:
Start warming up! Northwood’s annual Talent Show is coming soon. We welcome all sorts of talents to give it a go. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Happy Fri-Yay!
We loved watching our caterpillars start to make the cocoons and are so looking forward to our butterflies soon. We also focused on several different life cycles to support our understanding as we wait for our caterpillars to turn into butterflies. We continued to write about Hyenas and are looking forward to publishing our books next week. We also did a great job helping support 3-5 with Milestones testing by being quiet in the hallways and giving them supportive posters.
