Dear 5th grade families,
What a full week in 5th grade ending in an exciting PBIS celebration, Cosmic Bowling! Students started writing letters to companies for our end of the year auction will began earning "Decade Dollars". We also started new units in science and social studies. Next week will be another busy week at Northwood as we begin preparing for our Poetry Cafe that will take place on Valentine's Day. Be sure to check with your student every night to stay in the know about all the things happening in 5th grade!
Fulton County has not made any decisions regarding school closure again next week, but with the uncertain winter weather, RemoteDay work has been sent home with students again this weekend. Attached are the potential remote day plans should schoolls be closed at the beginning of the week. Please make sure your student completes the work if we are out of school and reach out with any questions!

The 3 letters along with 3 stamps are due this Wednesday, February 4th for students to receive their “Banking App sheet” with their first $100. We are also in need of stamp donations! Please send in at least 5 stamps with your student by the end of next week.
Valentine’s Day
Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, and we are planning to celebrate by exchanging Valentines on Friday, February 13th . All students can send in or bring in valentines if they would like to participate, but all items must be prepackaged. Sending in valentines is not required, however, if you do choose to send them in, please make sure there are enough for the entire class. Please also stay tuned for more information about the Poetry Café on Friday, February 13th!
World Read Aloud Day
Next Wednesday, February 4th, is World Read Aloud Day! We would love to have a few mystery readers throughout the day! There are only 4 spots available so be sure to sign up quick using this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0849ABAD28A3F9CE9-61959343-world#/
Reading Skill Groups
Students will participate in flexible reading groups across the grade level to receive instruction that best matches their individual reading needs. This means your child may work with different teachers during a small portion of the reading block, depending on the specific skills they are practicing or have already mastered. These groups change as students grow, ensuring they get the right support or enrichment at the right time. This will not change your child’s homeroom class, and your child will be with their teacher of record for the remainder of the ELA block. Flexible grouping simply helps us provide more targeted, effective reading instruction for every learner. Please reach out to Mrs. Imhulse if you'd like more information about reading skills groups imhulse@fultonschools.org.
Reminders
- When your child will be absent, email northwoodattendance@fultonschools.org (and copy me on it) to explain the reason for your child's absence. Please try to limit absences during the week so students do not fall behind in class!
- Email transportation changes to myself and NWESdismissal@fultonschools.org by noon the same day.
- Please be sure to check and sign your child's agenda every night.
- Please make sure to send a coat with your child to school each day! We still go outside for recess if temps are above 32 degrees and want to make sure students are dressed appropriately for the weather.
- If you did not at the beginning of the year, please be sure to send in a new 5 subject notebook with your student when we return!

2-20-26
Dear Parents,
Is it Friday already? We had a short but productive week here at school with the students. On Wednesday we had a few players from the Atlanta Gladiators come and read stories and share about their careers. Decade topics have now been selected, and students should be well underway with their research and background reading. Read on for more details about the project.
Decade Project
Today, your child started research on their Decade topic. They also received a Decade Project Timeline and Decade Project Note Taking packet. Please review these materials with your child and support as needed. Some class time will be given next week to research, but some may need to be completed at home. If you are able, consider taking a trip to the local library, bookstore, or help with some online research using the recommended sites.
PickUp Patrol
Starting Monday, February 23, 2026, we will be using a system called PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately dismissed each day.
How It Works:
- Your child’s regular dismissal plan will be entered into the system. This is considered their Default Plan.
- Whenever your child is doing something other than their Default Plan, you’ll submit a Plan Change via PickUp Patrol.
- Examples of a Plan Change:
- Your child normally rides the bus but needs to switch to carpool for the day.
- Your child is getting picked up by someone other than yourself (must be an emergency contact in Infinite Campus).
- Your child has a doctor's appointment and will be leaving early.
- When the change is submitted, a notification will be sent to the front office and their teacher.
REGISTER: Today, Friday, February 20, 2026, you will receive a registration email from PickUp Patrol with a link to set up your account. The parent portal is free to parents and can be accessed from your phone or computer. The link in your registration email will be live for 48 hours. As soon as you receive it, please log in and confirm your child’s default plan.
Thank you for using PickUp Patrol to make safety a priority and to ensure our dismissal process is efficient for all! Parents can access all of their children in the same account as long as the same email address is used. Once you are registered you do not need to re-register for each child, you will simply log out and back in again to view all children in the app.
If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide & if you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Lorraine Robertson at Northwood's front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org. Please note, starting Monday, the Northwood Dismissal email will no longer be utilized.

Dear Parents,
Students have made a great start to their decade project essay this week and should have their introduction and first body paragraphs completed, and be ready to wrap it up next week. They have enjoyed learning more about the Cold War in Social Studies and produced some thoughtful models for sorting animal groups in Science. Monday is the start of March Madness. Over the course of the next 5 weeks, students will battle against each other in a single elimination tournament to encourage iReady use and earnd Decade Dollars- it’s a lot of fun! Next week is also Read Across America Week - see the photo below for all of the fun theme days we have planned to celebrate!
